I am writing you this formal letter to make a request to you concerning an in-kind donation of gift cards, gift certificates and/or auction item to help support The Gift Of A Helping Hand Every Penny Count Fundraising Event.

 

This event will raise funds to help support The Gift Of A Helping Hand Emergency Shelter. The emergency shelter will provide housing for the 60% of homeless single mothers with children and the 0.4% of homeless single mothers with children leaving out of domestic violence situations in southeastern Michigan.

 

The Gift Of Giving Every Penny Count will support the 80% of households in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan living at or below the poverty rate. Fifty percent of poverty-stricken single mothers with children under 18 years of age are living below the poverty-rate. Fifty-six percent of mothers with children under 5 years only are living below the poverty-rate.

 

Twenty-three perent of the homeless population is children with their families. 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime. In 2001, 85% of victims of domestic violence were women. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence 2005 report.

 

0.2% of domestic violence situation against women resides in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan. Request for emergency shelter increased by 13% shelter requests for homeless families increased 22%. There is a need for more emergency shelters and transitional housing for the 60% of homeless single mothers with children and homeless single mothers with children leaving out of domestic violence situation. 0.4% of women domestic violence cases are chronic.

 

Less than 10,000 beds are available to house the 10,000 to 14,000 homeless constituency on the city streets of Detroit every night, so there is a great need for more homeless shelter capacity, beds and cots to house the homeless constituency.
